Our recommendation: GPI tourist insurance online
The Georgian insurer GPI Holding sells Tourist Mandatory insurance, which meets Georgia’s requirements, directly online. It is low-cost, quick to buy and made for exactly this purpose.
| Cover amount | Up to 100,000 GEL – well above the required amount |
|---|---|
| Length | 3–365 days |
| Price | Worked out online, based on the length of your trip. Georgian tourist insurance prices are typically about 1.7–2 GEL per day – so a ten-day trip costs only a few euros. |
| What it covers | First aid and an ambulance, urgent outpatient care, urgent hospital care, urgent dental treatment and, in the event of death, the return of the body to Tbilisi airport |
| When it starts | If you buy it before you leave, from the moment you cross the border. If you buy it in Georgia, only after 24 hours. |

Buy the insurance
You buy it on GPI’s online service, in English. Allow about 10 minutes, and keep your passport and payment card to hand.
Buy GPI tourist insurance → Read the insurance termsBuying it step by step
-
1
Book your flights first
Buy the insurance only once you know your arrival and departure dates. You need them for the insurance.
-
2
Choose the length of your trip
Open GPI’s purchase page and choose Date of entry (the day you arrive in Georgia) and Date of departure (the day you leave). Check that the page counts the number of days correctly.
- Add some spare time to your return date. If your treatment takes longer or your return flight moves, the insurance must cover your whole stay. A couple of extra days cost only a few extra lari.
- The shortest length of insurance is 3 days.
-
3
Fill in the details of the people insured
Under Insured People, enter each traveller’s details from their passport. Write the name exactly as it appears in the passport. If someone travels with you, they need their own insurance too.
-
4
Fill in the policyholder’s details
Under Policyholder, give the buyer’s details and email address. Check the email address carefully – the insurance certificate will be sent there.
-
5
Pay and save the insurance certificate
Pay by card under Purchase. The insurance certificate arrives in your email.
- Save the PDF on your phone so that it opens even without an internet connection.
- Take a screenshot of the certificate – it is the quickest to show.
- If you like, print a paper copy and keep it inside your passport.
-
6
Show the insurance if you are asked
Keep the certificate ready for the whole trip. The airline may ask for it at check-in at home, and it may be asked for with your passport at Georgian border control. A picture or PDF on your phone is enough.
Do I also need my own travel insurance?
GPI tourist insurance
- Meets Georgia’s entry requirement
- Low-cost and quick to buy
- Covers urgent treatment in Georgia
- Valid only in Georgia
Your own travel insurance from home
- Also covers the journey, connecting airports and the trip home
- May include trip cancellation and luggage
- Is accepted in Georgia if it meets the conditions and you get a certificate in English
- Check whether it covers a treatment trip
We recommend having both. GPI’s insurance meets Georgia’s requirement for certain and with no fuss, and your own travel insurance protects the whole trip. If your own travel insurance meets Georgia’s requirements and you can get a certificate in English, you may not need a separate GPI policy.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need insurance when I travel to Georgia?
Yes. From 1 January 2026, Georgia requires all foreign travellers to have valid health and accident insurance for the whole stay. The cover must be at least 30,000 GEL, and the insurance certificate must be in English or Georgian.
Is a UK travel insurance policy accepted in Georgia?
It is accepted if it covers the whole of your stay in Georgia, the cover is at least 30,000 GEL, and you have a certificate of the insurance in English. Ask your insurer for the certificate before you travel.
Does Georgia’s compulsory insurance cover dental treatment?
Not planned treatment. The compulsory tourist insurance covers sudden illness and accidents in Georgia, and urgent dental treatment. You always pay for planned dental treatment yourself.
When should I buy the insurance?
Before you leave. GPI tourist insurance bought before you enter Georgia starts when you cross the Georgian border. Insurance bought in Georgia starts only after 24 hours.
What should I do if I fall ill in Georgia?
Call GPI’s medical service number +995 32 2 505 111 before you go for treatment, and give your name and your insurance number. Please also tell the SmileGeorgia coordinator – we will help with the contact.
What if my stay gets longer?
The insurance must cover the whole stay. If your return moves to a date after the insurance ends, contact GPI (+995 32 2 605 111 or info@gpih.ge) and arrange an extension before the insurance ends.
