Dental Costs in Finland vs Georgia 2026 – Crowns, Dentures and Queues

Seppo Metsälä · SmileGeorgia.pro · Updated 21.10.2026 · Reading time approx. 8 min
In short: Crowns, veneers and dentures cost about 60–85% less in Georgia than in the Finnish private sector. A zirconia crown typically costs €710–1,100 in Finland and €190 in Tbilisi. Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) does not reimburse crowns or dentures in either country. One crown is not worth the trip, but with four crowns the saving is about €2,000, and with a full-mouth treatment more than €15,000 – travel costs included. You can also start treatment within weeks, not months.

For many Finns, major dental work is one of the biggest health costs of their lives. Crowning a whole mouth in the private sector can cost as much as a new car, and in the public sector you may have to queue for months. That is why more and more people are looking at options abroad. This comparison puts private and public dental prices in Finland side by side with the prices at our partner clinics in Tbilisi.

Private prices: Oral, PlusTerveys, Hammasklinikka Kruunu and Hammassampo, October 2026. Public prices: the patient fees of the Kymenlaakso wellbeing services county in 2026 are used as an example; fees and the estimate of dental technical costs vary from region to region. A visit fee (approx. €30–34 per visit) is charged on top of the private prices.

Public dental care in Finland is surprisingly cheap – if you can get an appointment. In the private sector you are seen quickly, but the price is several times higher. Georgia combines the benefits of both: the price is even lower than the public one, and you can start treatment within a few weeks.

Queues – time is money too

By law, anyone over 23 must be able to get non-urgent dental care within six months of the assessment of their need for treatment. In many areas this is not happening:

7,700
people in Tampere had waited more than six months to see a dentist. Notice from the Regional State Administrative Agency (AVI), situation in February 2025
€800,000
penalty payment imposed on the Ostrobothnia wellbeing services county after dental queues exceeded the legal maximum by as much as 9 months. AVI, December 2025
over 6 months
can be the wait for a first treatment-guarantee check-up, for example in Kiuruvesi. Kiuruvesi-lehti newspaper, May 2026

The situation varies a lot from region to region, and in some municipalities the queue is now 1–3 months. For extensive treatment, however, the queue rarely ends with the first visit: crowns and dentures need several visits, and you may have to wait for each one. In Tbilisi, treatment usually starts within a few weeks of your first contact, and crowns are made during a single trip of 7–10 days.

What does Kela reimburse?

Many people are surprised by how little Kela reimburses for extensive dental treatment. For private care, Kela reimburses, for example, an oral examination (€30) and a tooth extraction (€10), but ceramic crowns, bridges, veneers and dentures are not reimbursed except for special groups such as war veterans.

Georgia is not in the EU, so Kela does not reimburse treatment done there at all. In practice the difference is small: for the extraction of eight teeth Kela would reimburse about €80 in Finland, while the saving in Georgia is thousands of euros.

Total costs including travel

The figures for Georgia include flights from Helsinki (return about €250, one change) and a week’s accommodation (about €350). The figures for Finland are typical private-sector prices without visit fees.

Finland: zirconia/ceramic crown €860, veneer €850, full dentures €1,900 + 10 extractions at €120 each. Georgia: partner clinic prices + flights €250 + 7 hotel nights at €50 each. Extensive full-mouth treatment usually needs more than one visit.

Jyrki’s story: over a year of waiting in Finland

Jyrki from Kuopio and Seppo Metsälä in Tbilisi
Jyrki and Seppo in Tbilisi.

Jyrki, from Kuopio, needed a full-mouth dental overhaul. He waited in Finland for over a year without getting confirmation of when treatment would begin. When he finally contacted SmileGeorgia, the travel from Kuopio to Tbilisi, the hotel and the treatment at the university clinic were arranged quickly.

In Tbilisi, 19 of Jyrki’s teeth were removed over two days under the care of Professor Otar Bregadze, and in the second week he received his new teeth. Treatment will continue in two months’ time at the same clinic.

I recovered well and the dental care was truly skilled.

When Finland, when Georgia?

Have treatment in Finland if…

  • you need one crown or a small repair
  • you can get into the public service within a reasonable time
  • your treatment needs close follow-up, for example extensive gum inflammation
  • you cannot travel for health reasons

Consider Georgia if…

  • you need several crowns, veneers or dentures
  • the private-sector estimate is thousands of euros
  • the queue for the public service is long
  • you want treatment at a university clinic, with an interpreter in your own language

The best result often comes from a combination: check-ups and oral hygiene in Finland, extensive prosthetic treatment in Georgia. Ask your Finnish dentist for copies of your X-rays and treatment plan – with them we can make a preliminary estimate before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dental crown cost in Finland?

At a private dentist, a ceramic crown typically costs €710–1,100 per tooth. In the public sector the patient fee is, for example, €268.30 per tooth in Kymenlaakso, and dental technical costs of about €300 are charged on top. In Georgia a zirconia crown costs about €190.

Does Kela reimburse dental crowns or dentures?

Usually not. For private dental care Kela reimburses, for example, an examination (€30) and a tooth extraction (€10), but ceramic crowns, bridges, veneers and dentures are not reimbursed except for special groups such as war veterans. Kela does not reimburse treatment done in Georgia at all.

How long do you have to queue for public dental care?

By law, anyone over 23 must be able to get non-urgent care within six months of the assessment of their need for treatment. The situation varies by region: in some municipalities the queue is 1–3 months, but in many areas the maximum time has been exceeded, and the Regional State Administrative Agencies have issued notices and penalty payments.

Is it worth going to Georgia for one crown?

Rarely. The total price of a single zirconia crown in Georgia, travel included, is roughly the same as in the Finnish private sector. The saving comes with more extensive treatment: with just four crowns the difference is about €2,000, and with a full-mouth treatment more than €15,000.

Who does the follow-up check-ups after treatment in Georgia?

Routine check-ups can be done by your own dentist in Finland. Take your X-rays and treatment records with you. If a problem appears with a crown or denture, the coordinator will sort it out with the clinic.

Can I use a Finnish treatment plan in Georgia?

Yes. Ask your Finnish dentist for copies of your X-rays and treatment plan. A preliminary cost estimate can be made from them before the trip. The final treatment plan is made at the clinic after an examination.
